Psychology

Psychology, the scientific study of the human behavior and thinking is an exciting and a fascinating area of study that explores the human experience in almost all aspects of our life. Studying the relationship between the mind and behavior, psychology seeks to answer questions about how and why we behave the way we do. Psychology takes in to consideration the influence of our brain, conscious and unconscious processes, social-cultural environment we grow up in and our childhood experiences in trying to understand our personality, preferences, nature of our relationships and our view of life and the world. Originating from the early philosophies of the mind, psychology has developed in to a leading scientific field involving academic, research and applied domains. Over the centuries insights drawn from understanding of human behavior have been applied in to mental and physical health, child development, education, criminal justice system, sports, business sector, military, politics and information technology. The field of psychology is considered a "Hub Science" with strong connections to almost all the fields where human activity is involved. As a result psychology today is the leading inter-disciplinary subject in the world and it would be impossible to find a field that psychology in not involved in.

Studying Psychology

Psychology is one of the most popular and in-demand subjects in higher education. Number of students applying for psychology courses has increased significantly making it very competitive to enter psychology program in good universities. As result of the high demand many universities have increased entry criteria to manage the applications and have increased the range of different courses in psychology at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Gaining a richer and deeper understanding of psychology can help people achieve insights into their own actions as well as a better understanding of other people. While psychological knowledge is often applied to the assessment and treatment of mental health problems, it is also directed towards understanding and solving problems in several spheres of human activity. By many accounts, psychology ultimately aims to benefit society. Individuals pursuing a career in psychology start with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. During the three years as an undergraduate student, they will learn core arrears in psychology. All leading universities, accreditation bodies and professional societies in psychology have made it compulsory that students study these core areas. Core areas in psychology: Biopsychology, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology, Research Methods. These subjects must be covered in depth in order to receive a comprehensive understanding of the subject and is essential for psychology students irrespective of the field of psychology they wish to progress in to. Upon completion of a bachelor’s degree in psychology, students are able to seek employment in a relevant field and/or pursue postgraduate education in a specialized area. Individuals may select a master’s degree based on their preferred field. In order to use the term a psychologist in line with the international professional standards one must have a master’s degree or a higher qualification. Areas such as clinical psychology involves a mandatory period of supervised training to become an independent practitioner. In some countries a doctoral degree /PhD is essential to become a chartered psychologist.

Studying psychology opens doors to many different career opportunities. Despite the popular belief that most psychology graduate go in to work in mental health, most psychology graduate develop careers in different fields other than mental health. Clinical Psychology Clinical psychology is the psychological specialty that provides continuing and comprehensive mental and behavioral health care for individuals, couples, families, and groups. This branch of psychology is concerned with the assessment and treatment of mental illness and abnormal behavior. This field integrates the science of psychology with the treatment of complex human problems, making it an exciting career choice for people who are looking to work in a challenging and a rewarding field. Counseling Psychology Counseling Psychology is a specialty in applied psychology that uses a broad range of techniques to help people improve their well-being, prevent and alleviate distress and maladjustment, resolve crises and increase their ability to function better in their lives. Counseling psychologists support personal and interpersonal functioning across the life span and pays particular attention to emotional, social, vocational, educational, health-related, developmental, and organizational concerns. Child and Adolescent Psychology Child and Adolescent Psychology uses a broad range of techniques to support and guide children and teenagers improve their well-being, academic performance, prevent and alleviate distress caused by negative childhood experiences, emotional distress due to family conflicts and increase their ability to function better in their future. Child and Adolescent psychologists support cognitive, social and moral development and functioning across childhood and are equipped to provide therapeutic support in learning difficulties, behavioral problems and emotional issues. Business & Organizational Psychology Business & Organizational Psychology is where insights drawn from psychological theories and models are applied in different aspects of a business. Business psychologists use psychological concepts to gain a competitive advantage in leadership, management, human resources, sales and marketing, branding and making technologies more effective and appealing.. They analyze, predict and influence humans using psychometric testing, neuro-marketing, consumer psychology, behavioral economics and cyber-psychology to make businesses more innovate, profitable. Criminal & Forensic Psychology Criminal & Forensic Psychology is a specialty in psychology that has become very popular as it offers many exciting, interesting and challenging career options. Using psychological concepts in law enforcement, judicial and correctional processes, criminal and forensic psychologists serve community fighting and preventing crimes to make society a safer place. From evaluating and assessing criminals, understanding and fighting radicalizations and terrorism to profiling and catching sex offenders, Criminal and forensic psychologists are using their understanding of human behavior and thinking to uncover the dark side of human mind. Technology & Psychology A high emotional quotient is also an asset in tech, where psychologists often find themselves working on multidisciplinary teams. All kinds of tech companies have hired psychologists for years—big names like Microsoft, Google, and Facebook have plenty on staff—but more people with psychology backgrounds are now finding a niche at startups. According to Forbes, investors provided a record-breaking $1.5 billion to mental health startups in 2020 alone (see Mental health, meet venure capital). Not all those startups employ psychologists, but many companies are very serious about getting the psychological science right, said Brian Pace, PhD, a psychologist and director of clinical AI (artificial intelligence) at Lyssn, a company that uses machine learning to give psychologists feedback on their clinical work. Psychologists not only have clinical know-how and data skills but also can help develop products that are accessible, equitable, and as unbiased as possible. They have the skill set to think through issues of delivery and monitoring how tech products are being used, Pace said. “The best people to have a finger on the pulse of how these platforms are being developed, run, and used are psychologists,” he said.

Private Hospitals, Clinics and NGO’s have 100's of vacancies for clinical psychologists & Psychotherapists in Sri Lanka. This demand will only increase in the future. Increasing alcohol & drug addiction, anger issues, high divorce rates, family issues has increased the need for clinical psychologists around the country. Schools, Pre-Schools, NGO’s and Hospitals are looking for child psychologists who can work with children affected by psychological issues as well as due to trauma and abuse Leading companies are recruiting a large number of psychology graduates to their HR departments for employee counseling, work stress and well-being management. Consumer Psychology, Cyber Psychology, Sports Psychology and Health psychology are the fastest developing areas that will create many job opportunities in Sri Lanka in the next 3-10 years to come.
